See our 'Calculating plant quantities for restoration projects' information sheet for guidance on determining planting densities. If planting more than one strata of vegetation, factor in the space occupied by plant types that are more widely spaced when determining quantities of smaller types of vegetation. For example, calculate the amount of shrubs based upon planting density and the area of the site, then subtract the amount of trees planned for the same area to determine the total quantity of shrubs needed. The form below calculates this for you for both shrubs and groundcovers. (Note: o.c. = on center)

Trees, Shrubs and Groundcovers:

Step 1: Enter the area of the planting site in square feet.

Step 2: Select tree planting density.

Step 3: Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of trees needed:

Step 4: Select shrub planting density.

Step 5: Select one of the following options based upon what strata of vegetation is included in the planting and click on the associated Calculate button:

Option 1: Planting shrubs only.

Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of shrubs needed:

Option 2: Planting trees and shrubs.

Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of shrubs needed if also planting trees:

Step 6: If including groundcovers in the planting, select density and then choose one of the two options below and click on the associated Calculate button:

Select groundcover (4" containers) planting density.

Option 1: Planting groundcovers only.

Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of groundcovers (4" containers) needed:

Option 2 : Planting trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of groundcovers needed if also planting trees and/or shrubs:

(Click on the Reset button to clear the form.)

Emergents:

Step 1: Enter the area of the planting site in square feet.

Step 2: Select planting density.

Step 3: Click on the Calculate button.

Total amount of emergents to plant:

Plant clumps at the selected planting density with four plants comprising each clump.

(Click on the Reset button to clear the form.)

Live stakes:

Step 1: Enter the area of the planting site in square feet.

Step 2: Select planting density.

Step 3: Click on the Calculate button.

Amount of stakes to plant:
