See our 'Calculating plant quantities for restoration projects' information sheet for guidance on determining planting densities. If planting more than one strata of vegetation, factor in the space occupied by plant types that are more widely spaced when determining quantities of smaller types of vegetation. For example, calculate the amount of shrubs based upon planting density and the area of the site, then subtract the amount of trees planned for the same area to determine the total quantity of shrubs needed. The form below calculates this for you for both shrubs and groundcovers. This calculator assumes grid spacing. (Note: o.c. = on center) Click here for an area conversion website. See our Links page for more restoration ecology tools available on the web.
